Cette région de la Bulgarie, culturellement appelée Rhodopes (Родопи) ou (Родопите) du nom de la chaîne montagneuse qui la traverse appartient à la région officielle de Thrace.
Cette partie a beaucoup souffert durant le 19e siècle, entre-autre car au sud, une partie de ce territoire appartenait à la république islamique d'Osmanli. C'est dans cette région que l'on rencontre de nombreuses minorités Pomaks (Помаци), bulgares orthodoxes convertis de force à l'Islam par les ottomans, au prix de massacres de villages entiers.
This region of Bulgaria, culturally called Rhodopes (Родопи) or (Родопите) from the name of the mountain chain which crosses it belongs to the official region of Thrace.
This part suffered a lot during the 19th century, among other things because in the south, part of this territory belonged to the Islamic republic of Osmanli. It is in this region that we find many Pomak minorities (Помаци), Bulgarian Orthodox forcibly converted to Islam by the Ottomans, at the cost of massacres of lot of villages.
